Realtors help cash-strapped youth center

By Jon Brines Press Tribune Correspondent

Over the last two weeks dozens of Keller Williams Realtors have put down their real estate signs and picked up a paint brush, rag or other cleaning supplies to help out a Roseville charity hard hit by the recession.

“It’s a big makeover for us,” said Kendra Shonkwiler, Roseville Police Activities League coordinator. “We try to get off-duty police officers to come over and help out and connect with the youth.”

The police activities league is a non-profit supported by the Roseville Police Department and the city’s Recreation Department.

“We try to reach out to kids who have had problems with police in the past,” Shonkwiler said.

Off-duty officers volunteer and help the league operate a gym behind the main police headquarters on Junction Boulevard. For a $25 membership, waived for the underprivileged, children 8 to 17 years old participate in boxing, martial arts and outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking and kayaking. The kids get to use the gym most days through the summer.

“It teaches them skills for leadership, confidence and discipline,” Roseville Sgt. Karl Dyer said. “It develops a relationship with police officers in a positive environment.”

Dyer said the makeover is an important lesson.

“It shows that the community cares,” Dyer said. “It lets the kids understand what community service is because they brought it to us.”

Keller Williams Realtors raised money through fundraisers to purchase two brand new side-by-side refrigerators for the gym. They also installed wall-to-wall cabinets for storage.

“We don’t have as many sponsorships this year,” Shonkwiler said. “Everybody is suffering because of the economy.”

Volunteer and Keller Williams Realtor Kathy Gobbi said for weeks volunteers painted, cleaned and cleared out storage as well as built picnic benches for the kids.

Keller Williams offices across the country participate in community service on May 13, which it calls it RED (Renew, Energize, Donate) Day. Gobbi said helping the Roseville Police Activities League was an easy choice.

“RPAL is a great organization,” Gobbi said. “The Roseville community trusts us to purchase their biggest investment and we need to give back.”

Artist Shane Grammer airbrushed an urban-themed, graffiti-style mural customized for the Roseville gym. Grammer said his art shows kids who’ve had a history of tagging that there are legitimate ways to advance their interests in the community.

“My art encourages the kids to follow their dreams and passions,” Grammer said.
